Travelling it leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller
– Ibn Battuta.
My trip to St Petersburg inspire me to write this blog, never did I thought a trip which I just took to get break from my daily regime will change My entire perception, from tourist I turned traveler, There is a saying, “Travel because you have no idea who you are until you experience yourself through different people and realize how we all are same”.
St Petersburg wasn’t my first choice, I choose to go to Georgia but due to the sudden change in visa policy I was left with short time to apply for a visa and then I decided for Russia. A place less common with Indians to choose a holiday destination, a little did I know about this place, I spent hours and hours to learn about this place before my trip, it is a city with a vast history & has so much to offer not only history but also a vibrant city life. There is something beautiful about this place that will leave you craving for more. I felt even my 4-day trip is not enough to know this place.
We went during Fall, the best time to visit this place, the weather was mild and the tourist cruises were gone. The time I reached St. Petersburg my heart swelled with joy, and everything seems so refreshing.
We stayed in a budget hotel located on Nevsky Prospekt, which is the heart of St Petersburg. After reaching, we changed and thought of exploring the city, there were many activities going on each corner, street musician, to magicians to flower vendors, such a beautiful day. As we walked we reached a Roman style Kazan Cathedral, outside of cathedral was intimidating, I never thought what was waiting for me inside, the beauty of the cathedral with so many people praying in front of the different icon was overwhelming me, it was as if I entered entirely a different world.
After spending nearly an hour in Cathedral, we exchanged our dollars, with the best exchange rates. and finished our day taking a long stroll on street.
The second day begins with a little bad start we were missing 600$, we looked everywhere, searched every inch of room, but could not found, we were frustrated and then we remembered we left our wallet on breakfast table and forgot there, which was returned to us by kitchen staff, we asked reception desk but she was bit cold towards us and said we cannot do anything regarding this, we lost hope to find it and decided to withdraw some money from ATM to start our day. We went to Church of our Saviour on spilled blood, situated on the banks of Neva river. It was a beautiful church made of mosaics, which represent the Russian Orthodox culture. It was a treat for the eye and for those who are an art lover.
After spending some time we headed towards The State of Hermitage
No wonder it was one of the world’s largest museum, there was so much history to learn inside the museum, though we didn’t take any guide, we got one audio guide available in the museum for an extra charge. We spent nearly 5 hrs in the hermitage and yet we felt we might have missed something.
It was already 8 pm, we went back to our hotel, and prepared our self for the next day trip to Pavlovsk. We gather all the information how to reach Pavlovsk from hotel reception desk.
Next day We woke a bit early so we can spend more time in Pavlovsk after reading so much about the beautiful park and palace.
We traveled Pavlovsk by metro from which we boarded at Nevsky Prospekt and got down at Moskovskaya station, from there we boarded a bus which goes to Pavlovsk via Pushkin. A trip to Pavlovsk was the best experience of my whole journey to St Petersburg, not only that we used public transport but traveling inside the suburbs was a joyful ride, on our way to Pavlovsk we met some locals who were very friendly and to my surprise changed my entire perspective about Russian people.
Pavlovsk park is enormous, it is mostly visited by the local public for a weekend getaway, you can find Russian family enjoying their day in this park. There is lake inside where people were seen enjoying the boat ride.
Pavlovsk Palace was situated in the park, from its view you will feel it’s a small palace as compare to what you see in St Petersburg, but from inside its very beautiful. The local curator lady inside the palace was quite friendly.
After amazing tour of the palace, we decided to relax in the park
While returning back to Nevsky we decided to go by train which goes from Pavlovsk palace till Kupchino metro station
The entire trip to Pavlovsk ended with beautiful memories.
It was our last day in St. Petersburg, the temp touched 2 degrees, this day we decided to start with some souvenir shopping.
Russia has many collectible souvenirs like Matryoshka (Russian doll), Faberge eggs, jewelry made from amber stone, vodka sets. We did our souvenir shopping on Nevsky street, there were some shops in the subways where we could bargain and got nice stuff.
After getting some souvenir, we headed towards St Issac Cathedral, the Golden dome of the Cathedral dominates the St Petersburg skyline, we saw the most amazing view of St Petersburg from its top.
Spending time in St Issac cathedral was amazing, we decided to end our last day by visiting Alex show ( a small wax museum), just near Hermitage museum, and Summer Garden, which has most beautiful statues.
After spending amazing 4 days in St Petersburg, it was our time to leave, with a promise to visit this beautiful place again.
